On September 15, attackers managed to steal $870,000 worth of cryptocurrency from the famous billionaire Mark Cuban. The culprit was a fake version of MetaMask, which Cuban had unwittingly installed. Let's find out more about the situation.
The suspicious transactions were first noticed by a X user (formerly Twitter), @WazzCrypto.
Billionaire's losses
The attacker withdrew a total of $870,000 from Cuban’s address in different tokens: USDT, USDC, MATIC, ETH, stETH, ENS, RARI, RARE, BIT, and AUDIUS.
Remarkably, the attacker overlooked the fact that Mark Cuban had more than $2 million USDC stored on the Polygon blockchain, which the billionaire was able to secure and transfer to Coinbase.
How did this happen
Later, Mark Cuban informed DL News that the reason was an unofficial version of MetaMask that he had installed on his device. He stated, "I'm pretty sure I downloaded a version of MetaMask with some shit in it."
